Book Review: "Messages from Water and the Universe" by Masaru Emoto

I have been a book-nerd my entire life. From the time that I was 4, I was devouring chapter books, chasing fantasies and complex ideas to feed my ever-growing mind.
My love for reading has followed me into adulthood, setting lofty goals for how many books I would like to read in a year (this year, it’s 75...woof). The point being -- I have read many books in my life so far, and they have all touched me in different ways.
Emoto's Water Work
When we received our latest book order, and I saw Masaru Emoto’s Messages from Water and the Universe, I was floored. Holding this little blue book in my hands, I could have sworn I had read it before. Even flipping through the pages, it seemed familiar, but really, it was the first time I had ever laid eyes on this absolutely beautiful and life-changing work. But my soul knew, “you must read this book.”
You may have seen the pictures floating around online of the water crystals, exposed to different ideas: love, gratitude, hate, etc. This was Emoto’s work as well.
His book Messages from Water and the Universe builds off of that foundational experiment and gives you a peek into his other studies and ideals, exploring the connection between water and the origins of the Universe, between water and our higher consciousness.
In a time where we are still reeling from the “Water Is Life” movement -- or at least, I am -- this book really underlines how important our connection to water is, and why we must nourish our water the same way it nourishes us.
His most repeated principle throughout this book is the concept of “love and gratitude.” Emoto breaks down the chemical formula of water -- H2O -- to symbolize this concept -- Gratitude2Love. He says that when you increase gratitude two-fold, when you give and receive gratitude, love spreads throughout the world. He calls the people who practice this energy exchange Aikansha-bito, or “beautiful humans of love and gratitude. “When everyone on Earth embraces these values, we’ll be surrounded by this spectacular, eternal shining light,” Emoto writes.
Dead Water and How to Fix It
He also addresses the world-wide plague of “dead water,” or water with chemical treatment. Even though the introduction of chemicals into our drinking water was to keep the water free of microorganisms and pollution -- thereby making it “safe” -- Emoto posits that it has killed the spirit of the water. However, hope is not lost. As he demonstrates throughout the book, a prayer and intention of “hado,” of “love and gratitude,” can revive the energy of the water.
“Our original form is water. If water can protect itself through love and gratitude, we can be protected by the same positive energy,” Emoto writes. “When we feel an abundance of love and gratitude in our hearts, that loving energy boosts our defenses -- we are protected.”
Japan, The Country of Water
Emoto also provides a peek into Shintoism and “Koshinto,” or the way of the Gods, and how that was impacted by the atomic bomb that devastated Japan -- “the country of water.”
Emoto believes the intent behind the atomic bomb was far more than war politics, but a pointed attempt to separate Japan from its connection to water, and therefore God in Emoto’s eyes, and its “traditional, pure vibration.”
“[The bomb] brought the end of Shintoism as the national religion, the prohibition of hemp (the plant of high hado energy), and the transformation of the emperor into a mere figurehead,” Emoto explains, illustrating the ways in which the Allied powers rebuilt Japan to their own standards.
Activate Our DNA
Toward the end of the work, Emoto discusses awakening our DNA via love and gratitude for water (and therefore ourselves, as we are glorified Water Beings). Scientists agree that on average, a mere 3% of our DNA is activated. This is troubling every time I read it. This means 97% of our genetic potential is totally lost to us unless we do something about it. Emoto believes that the “something” we must do is begin to express our reverence for water via love and gratitude, or “hado.” He says that he believes the signs of this DNA re-awakening is via goose bumps and synchronicity, both of which I continually experienced while reading this text.
I am a believer. #WaterIsLife.
