We recommend reading our chakra series in order, starting with Root Chakra: Tending Your Primal Fire, followed by Sacral Chakra: Feed Your Inner Flame, and finally Solar Plexus: Emanating Your Light before reading the rest of this post.
A steady beat, fostering a constant flow. A life force. A quickening with your nervous system alight. A fluttering. A space that holds many memories, caverns of old.
Your heart is not just one of the most crucial organs in the human body for sustaining life. It is the center of the energetic body. It is your Center, pumping life-giving blood, pulsing life-changing signals throughout your whole body.
Are you living in Love? Feeling heartbroken? Heartless? Closed? Or wide open, heart on your sleeve? Do you trust too easily, or maybe not at all? What tangled realities are tied up in your heart center?
About the Heart Chakra
The Heart, or Anahata, literally means “unstruck,” a nod to the Vedic concept of “Anahata Nad” – the unstruck sound. This is the idea that when we are still enough, quiet enough, there is a silent message thrumming from our heart center. That with enough release, in a place of absolute silence, we might hear this soundless communication.
Before we might even dream of hearing this buried message in such a loud world, we must first begin to unpack the baggage weighing on our hearts and begin to balance out our Anahata.
An imbalanced heart center leads to feelings of jealousy, unworthiness, and ultimately, fear and hatred. These heavy emotions are far too cacophonous to translate our heart’s truest call.
When we allow fear to trump love, we create quite a mess of our own energy, flowing outward into the world and into the global collective. When we detach from our heart center, we are capable of wreaking terror on this Earth and its inhabitants. We turn a blind eye to the people who need our divine capacity for love, starting with ourselves.
A heart without boundary, without self-respect and self-care, is just as detrimental. When we pour all of our love into the external, we save nothing for ourselves. When we allow our personal boundaries to be crossed every day, we hollow out what was once a treasure trove of divinity. We dry up what should have been an endless spring.
So how to we attain balance?
Clearing out the Caverns
Remembering our connection to the Earth through our root, the roaring sacral fire, and your inner Sun, we allow this primal and beautiful warmth to bring our awareness to the watery realm within our chest: Our Heart. Before you start, head outside, into a lush green landscape, either in your mind or in reality. Nature is the greatest heart-healer of all.
Holding your right hand over your sternum, right over your heart, begin to notice your own rhythm. As you bring your left hand to meet your right, think of all the ways your heart is currently nourishing you.
Physically, she revitalizes your entire body with a fresh supply of oxygen-rich blood. Pay attention as each cell breathes in your heart-magick.
She is a physical representation of your capacity to sustain, endure, love, remember.
Now, bring your attention to the shape and weight of your heart. What does she look like right now, in your mind's eye? Imagine her as a castle, with endless hallways and rooms for storing all of your love, loved memories, lost loves. Does it feel like its time to shake some of this loose? Fill the hurting or empty rooms with love instead?
Let us create a vortex.
With your hands still over your heart, begin to spiral the chest to the left. Isolating your rib cage, and keeping the movement small, create a swirling, whirling vortex down your spine, expressing through your root and back down in to the fiery core of the Earth.
Let the heaviness fall away. Let the feeling of unworthiness get washed into oblivion.
Once you have cleared the caverns of your beautiful heart, change the direction of your spiral. Now, instead of releasing, we are accepting a new kind of energy. We ask the Earth for sustenance, for support, for unbridled love. We accept this energy with each clockwise spiral of the chest.
When you are ready, come to stillness. Feel the lightness of your heart. Feel the love in your chest. Let it radiate through every cell with each beat.
In this silent stillness, perhaps there is a message, just for you. Listen to Her.
Gemstones that Resonate
There are many stones that energetically align with the heart. The primary colors for this chakra are green and pink, but as you peruse this list, you will realize that this rule is easily broken. These are some of my favorite heart allies:
- Green Calcite

- Pink Calcite
- Pink Opal
- Pink Tourmaline
- Rose Quartz
- Ruby in Fuschite
- Ruby Record Keeper
Eating for the Heart Chakra
As I have mentioned in each post thus far, your body literally changes food into energy. That is the primary function of eating – to fuel your body. So, when we eat certain foods, we fuel certain parts of our bodies. Here is a list of (delicious) heart-healthy foods – physically and energetically:
- Green Apples
- Green Bell Pepper
