How to Create a Sacred Altar

In the midst of chaos and an ‘always on the go’ mentality, it’s important to be able to have a space that you can come to at the start or end of your day where you can unwind. Establishing a sacred altar in your home could create this space for you.

An altar is a place that can house anything from crystals, plants, candles and other items that you enjoy or like to use in your spiritual practice. An altar can also be a space that is used for spellwork, manifestation, or meditation.

Finding a Place for Your Altar

Your altar can be anywhere you’d like, but it’s often placed in a quiet corner or area of the home. This is because spiritual and sacred work is done at an altar, and a quiet space helps you to stay focused. What is beautiful about an altar, however, is that it can be entirely catered to you. If you don’t have a quiet corner where the altar can be displayed at all times, you could keep it in a box that stays tucked away until you are ready to use it. If you don’t want a permanent altar, you can go out into nature and create an altar out of leaves, flowers, and other botanicals that you may find. This space is entirely for you, so you can let it serve you as you desire.

Setting an Intention

When creating a sacred altar space, what would you like the get from the space? An altar can be a place for meditation, where you keep your mala, a candle for trataka meditation, and cushions. It can be a place where you honor a specific deity or deities that you may work with or worship. An altar can also be a place where you honor your ancestors, manifest self-love, or create spell jars. Whatever you choose, hold that intention close to your heart and repeat your intentions or desires as you cleanse the space where your altar will go. The space can be cleansed with a burning bundle or smudge stickPalo Santo, or incense

Adding to Your Altar

An altar can house anything and everything you’d like it to. From crystals to candles, there is so much potential to add to an altar and make it entirely your own. Depending on your intentions, there are so many crystals that you could place on your altar. Those such as Rose QuartzAmazonite, Amethyst, Rhodonite, and Carnelian all help to channel compassion, kindness, and self-love. Black TourmalinePyrite, and Black Obsidian are all stones that can be used for protection. Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, and Malachite are all great crystals for manifestation. Starting with a little research and determining which stones will be best for your space and your intentions is a great place to start, especially when there are so many crystals to choose from.

Candles or incense is also great to keep on an altar space. Incense helps to cleanse the space and smell amazing. Scents like Frankincense, Palo Santo, White Sage, and Dragon’s Blood are popular to use and have spiritual properties. Candles can be used to create a relaxing space or for spell work such as creating spell or protection jars.

An altar is also a great space to house items that honor a deity if you choose to work with or follow one. This could be any deity or spiritual figure from Buddha, to Kali, and even the goddess Rhiannon. Whoever you are called to, you can leave out offerings of food, drink, flowers, or other small items in front of the statue or candle that represents your deity.

If you are a green witch or simply enjoy nature, you can place flowers, plants, and other botanicals on your altar. This invites the earth in and adds a little bit of color and life to your home.

A Sacred Space in Your Home

Creating a sacred altar in your home can help to ground you in your spiritual practice and remind you that there continues to be work that needs to done. Work that can help you ascend into the greatest and truest version of yourself.
