Red Cedar is the East Coast's dominant Juniper variety, also known as Juniperus Virginiana. Juniper is a long and slow-growing tree, and can live from 200-300 years.
Red Cedar or Juniper has been used in multiple traditions including; western, Ayurveda, and traditional Chinese medicine as a blood tonic and blood purifier. In folk herbalism, it is considered a “fall tonic” plant, to compliment Dandelion and other spring tonics, and would be used to help support the kidneys and “clear” or “thicken” the blood. The benefits of Red Cedar include: helping to flush out any stagnation, purify the air of any negative energies, cleanse, clear, and promote strength & wisdom.
Red Cedar is tied to the element of fire, with astrological associations to Mars in Aries and was traditionally used in spells to get back property that was stolen and as a deterrent to theft. It was also used in purification rites and to drive away lingering spirits. The purification uses of Juniper go back to the Greeks, who burned it for purification and to the Egyptians, who used it both medicinally and for embalming.
